Exceptional bust in turquoise-blue marble inlaid with yellow Sienna marble fillets, marble stucco for the face and hard stones (alabaster teeth, Carrara marble eyes inlaid with Chilean lapis lazuli...). The figure features the god Mars in cuirass, with a helmet adorned with a salamander or dragon (allegory of fire) and the mask of the Medusa in low relief on the chest.

Apart from its aesthetic qualities, this bust bears witness to two major trends at the end of the 19th century:

- The renaissance of polychrome sculpture, which enjoyed great success thanks to artists such as Jean-Léon Gérôme, Charles Henri Joseph Cordier...

- Artists' interest in the expression of passions and physiognomy.
